Firstly, Education is defined by Wikipedia as “…a purposeful activity directed at achieving certain aims, such as transmitting knowledge or fostering skills and character traits. These aims may include the development of understanding, rationality, kindness, and honesty…”
Therefore, every time you intentionally take a lesson on something, acquire a skill. Or read a blog on mental healthcare, skincare, and housecare. Learned a recipe, understood patience from becoming responsible for a very important thing, etc. You’ve gained knowledge.
A few things to note about education and self development
- First off, education is an important fuel for self-development. The value gained from experiences, places, feelings, people, study, etc. is the fuel of growth.
- Also, you should want to acquire an education. Out of your own will and decision, and not necessarily by the influence of other people’s opinions.
- Of course, it’s okay to be unsure of what path to take with the educational route. Just take time to counsel yourself with a book and pen if you need to.
- Emphatically, ask yourself questions about what you enjoy doing. Such as your hobbies, interests, passion, and what kind of education should you get to better your passion.
- There may be a variety of options and it’s up to you to select whichever you feel comfortable with.
- Subsequently, If you can’t go through this process alone, you can seek counseling from someone you respect and trust, or a professional education counselor.

- Education isn’t restricted to passion. You can learn about navigating life better, changing your outlook, etc. through education
Is education an investment or an asset?
According to Investopedia, an asset or an item is purchased with the hope that it will generate income or appreciate in value at some point in the future.
Hence, an asset is a valuable resource owned with the expectations of an increase or future benefit. Therefore, dedication is an asset and an investment. Or an investment that becomes an asset.
“…education is the greatest asset to obtain limitless possibilities, satisfy curiosity, open doors…”

why is education important for self development
It is a valuable resource for growth
Education is a valuable resource. Although you can’t physically touch or measure its physical quantity.
It’s more of a utility that you spend money on acquiring with the aim of adding value to your personal being, over a long period of time. A long-term, lifelong asset if you may.
For the most part, to acquire an education, you typically have to spend money to “purchase” it from places of learning.
Every smart investor knows to research the potential value or core benefits of an intended investment. In this case, education is the intended investment.
Overall, this simply means making research on the benefits of the course you’re about to take. Particularly, what value does it add to you now and in the future, and what will it generate for your personal life? Is this to boost your career or a personal project, or a hobby? Does it expand your capacity and portfolio? Does it give you help run your business better? etc.
There should be a purpose for your investment in education. Give it a great deal of thought, and talk to yourself and the people you trust on this journey you’re about to embark on.
Define the end goal of this “investment” such as enhancing your career, acquiring a skill to expand your portfolio, or just acquiring new knowledge on in-depth knowledge on a phenomenon, philosophy, etc.
Significantly, every great thing we enjoy today is a product of knowledge that has been acquired over time. However, you may argue that some of the richest men in the world today dropped out of college or some similar story.
As a matter of fact, before they embarked on any financial investment they had access to knowledge and information, in the process of growing their investment into the multi-billion dollar corporations they are today.
They subsequently sharpened their knowledge over the course of running these empires, in one form or the other. Knowledgeable personalities and minds were likewise employed and consulted. Hence, their knowledge is an asset to them and the companies they work for or the companies they own.
Education is essential to self-love
Surely, there’s a form of education in every aspect of life. A lesson to be learned. Education is important for self-development because teaches you to view mistakes as a learning process, a creative process.
You learn from the inconsistencies of your failed model, over and over till you get a working model. This mindset is very much important for living.
Life is filled with uncertainties and unpredictability. Also, it offers management skills in time, finances, people, situations, etc. The logic of education helps manage unpleasant situations better, handle disappointments better, engage with different kinds of people, make smart money choices, etc.
Education is the foundation of confidence
I love making business plans, but I always sucked at it. There were so many loose screws in my business models. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I made a business plan for a lingerie business I was planning to start by the end of that year.
I sent my final work to a friend who had more business experience. He told me my plan was basic, very much in a fantasy state and there was nothing to compel in investor’s money.
He encouraged me to learn in-depth lessons on business planning. And I took his advice, I took an online course which led to another and another. Everything I discovered about the world of business, left me in awe. So much so that I’ve decided to take a master’s course in business management.
I have so much fun making business plans and the knowledge of creating business plans helps me make important decisions in my personal life through strategic thinking. I’m confident in my business plans, they’ve more viable. And obviously, that just makes me feel very good about myself.
Knowledge enhances your confidence. Acquisition of knowledge helps ground yourself better because of the assurance it gives. You feel better about yourself after you’ve had several eureka moments that shake off your doubts and change your perspective. Your sharpened skill helps relationships with yourself and people. It shakes off your doubts and changes your perspective.
Confidence comes from knowing your strengths and weaknesses, acknowledging them, and working with them while trying to better yourself. It inspires a better understanding of oneself and this understanding helps form better attitudes, smoother relations with people, relationships, and better dispositions, amongst others.
You do not easily sway out of your decisions when you’re confident. You make decisions that are beneficial to you and never out of pressure from other people
It provides navigation through thoughts. A thinking process, enabling you to strategically draw up models of situations.
Analyze possible difficulties and equally create different possible solutions for them. Making better life decisions increases profitability and productivity and education offers this to you.
“…the purpose of education is to replace an empty mind with an open one…”
Malcolm Forbes
Naturally, knowledge improves your standard of thinking.
Evidently, it offers a different, wider perspective of viewing life. An open mind is unprejudiced toward other views and perspectives.
You’re willing to try out new ideas on your own time and access information. You’re willing to listen to a belief or thought which doesn’t align with yours, and see things from others’ perspectives without necessarily being influenced or swayed from your beliefs.
Education offers you a window to just mind your business and do your thing while letting other people do their own thing.
You’re on a path to a different destination from the next person, but you can always learn new things from other people’s orientations, cultures, social values, lifestyles, history, personal experiences, etc.
Open minds let you dissect and appreciate the logic behind thoughts, beliefs, and lifestyles. You gain insights that can challenge you or inspire you. You learn new things about yourself, test new limits, set new boundaries, and develop respect for yourselves and others.
Education provides a better society.
I guess the social and economic as well as mental utility value of education is the reason behind its expensive nature. I support the idea of making quality education more accessible to the masses.
The government should subsidize the high cost of education to enable lower-income communities to afford quality education. Places with a lack of access to any form of education are often characterized by crime and poverty for obvious reasons.
“…education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world…”
Nelson Mandela
The easy access to quality education and funds offered to wealthier people puts them above less wealthy people in terms of qualifications and exposure. This makes education a really necessary investment for self-development and life betterment.
A society with access to a good educational structure is a productive society. The personal benefits of education trickle down to aggregate societal benefits. More high-value members of society promote a healthy economic and maybe social society.
Forms of education you should know about.
Any of these mentioned forms are respectable on their own. Some career path specialization encourages you to have more than one type of education. Any form of education is valid, just do whatever you’re capable of.
Formal education:
This usually takes place in educational institutions, set and recognized by the government following a strict rigid curriculum and usually guided by a teacher where the students are classified based on age and progress.
As they grow and progress, they move systematically from Kindergarten, high, or a secondary school education and finally, post-high school education. Each progression is awarded results which are graded by individual academic performance.
The higher your academic performance, the higher your level of intelligence. This may be true for some students but there are opposing arguments on examination being a test of true knowledge because it’s easy for one to cheat their way in these kinds of education systems.
Informal Or Semi-formal Education
While some learn the concept of electricity in a physics class, and the history, and intricacies of fashion from fashion school, informal education teaches electricity through on hands experience and the art of garment making through physical practical teaching.
The informal education sector can be characterized by the transfer of knowledge by showing practical examples. This form of education is organized and is mostly run by organizations or private individuals and the government of some countries. In recent times, this has become a source of job creation and entrepreneurship among different countries across the world.
Non-formal Education:
This encompasses education for character traits. This involves activities like swimming, learning a new language, learning to dance, learning anger management, etc. This form of education is open-ended with no form of curriculum.
In summary
Education in any form is important. A good life moral to live with is that you’re not better than the next human who has fewer education qualifications than yourself you.
There’s nothing that doesn’t need knowledge. Entrepreneurship needs knowledge. Being a writer, content creator, machine skills, technology, and sciences. Everything needs knowledge to make it work.
If higher education is too expensive for you, the world has come to a place where you can learn from high-ranking schools for free or for less money, online. While being an entrepreneur, you can take a short course in management or finance. You can employ your knowledge to carry out services for people.
Spirituality needs education, in fact, it is a form of education. You’re learning to create a connection with your God, your inner self, nature, etc. The process involves learning and practicing philosophies on spiritual growth and well-being.
Education is the most important personal investment of all personal investments. Whether you choose to learn anthropology or you chose to learn carpentry or beauty and skincare, or mathematics Just make sure there’s a purpose behind your choice, a goal to be achieved, or just a curiosity to satisfy.
