My lip care journey/story;
My lips were constantly subjected to ridicule by my family, both young and old. I was always reminded of how ugly, dark, and big they were. Someone even compared them to huge snails.
Subsequently, I grew up with that insecurity. Although fuelled primarily by my immediate family members. Scared to smile because I didn’t want to show my ugly wide teeth to anyone. I could do without the constant insults and actual looks of genuine curiosity! I admired the girls with beautiful smiles.
Today, I’m convinced that my insecurities fueled my curiosity about what beauty is. I remember becoming obsessed with staring intently at people’s features whenever I could.
Obviously, I wanted to understand what makes people beautiful because everyone looked so different. Especially focusing on lips and smiles, ranking people’s lips and smiles. The top results were what I wanted mine to look like.
One silly memory is trying to mimic my lips into a beautiful curve of a smile I ranked.
So began my obsession with beauty. Lip care, how to get them softer, how to get the pink, etc. In due time, my acceptance of my lips came albeit fueled by my attempts to have “better-looking” lips.
I’m not saying that my lips were imperfect, no. I love my lips today and they haven’t changed from what shape or size they were before. However, I realized you have to take care of anything to bring out its beauty. Such beauty which only unique to it. After all, beauty is very much in everything and depends very much on who the beholder is. In this case, you’re the beholder.
How to accept life and your reality.
Over time, with consistency and dedication, I found what worked for me. Nonetheless were cultivated after numerous trials and errors and obviously lots of expenses. I spent a lot of money purchasing industrially made chemicals. Sadly, they mostly ended up burning my lips out and the skin surrounding them.
I decided to switch to natural products on a whim. Chiefly to see if they worked better. Thanks to my ‘research’, I’m here to help you too on your journey of self-care. Taking care of your body and physical looks is a form of self-love. when carried out in moderation.
Your lips are a part of your body, a very sensitive, very fragile, very important part of your body. It’s on your face, you see it when you look at your face and others see it too. You have to take care of your lips to bring out the best version of them.
How to care for your lip.
- Remember that your lips are very sensitive and important parts of your body. Treat them with patience, respect, and gentleness.
- Always keep your lips clean. Yes, clean your lips after eating, after doing anything with them. Keep it physically clean and keep your lips clean from other people’s lives and businesses.
- Always exfoliate your lips gently not harshly. When cleaning your lips through exfoliation, it’s important to remember that lips are tender parts of your skin. Therefore, they can break when handled roughly. Exfoliating products can often be mildly abrasive. So it’s important to keep this in mind when next you want to exfoliate your lips.
- Practice exfoliation at least 3 times a week. Over-exfoliating can make your lips sour with tiny wounds, and then make your lips hard.
- Use a soft toothbrush to exfoliate. This is a trick I learned from my roommates in school. It worked physical wonders for my lips. You will indeed see results at the first trial. Wet your lips then your soft brush to lightly brush your lips. One lip after another in the same motion (e.g. left to right). For a few minutes, then rinse your lips. Rinse the brush as well.
- Always keep your lips hydrated especially if you’re a smoker. Hydration is the key to soft lips and skin and hair, etc. Use hydrating lip balms. You can get them online or you can use the recipe in this article to make one for yourself
- Always drink water. Keep your body hydrated and your lips hydrated from the inside out when you drink water.
- Avoid licking your lips frequently. Abstain from it. It dries your lips up faster and makes you do it again and again, which becomes awkward. Use lip balm.
- Avoid wearing excessive lip gloss in the sun. I know it looks great in pictures but you’re subjecting your lips to sun damage. It doesn’t take a great scientist to know what oil and heat can achieve together.
- Use clean makeup and beauty products. Some products are very toxic to your skin, be mindful of the products you apply to your skin. Some of them have danger-causing and life-threatening side effects. In addition to their unethical production method. This reason is solely why I use homemade beauty products as much as I can.
- Relax your facial muscles. Relax your face some more, and let the facial muscles loose. Release the tension around your mouth, around your face, etc.
- Avoid staying in the sun for too long. Sun damage on the skin is becoming more and more alarming. It’s very important to use sun protection before stepping out and just avoid the sun as much as you can.
- Be mindful of your oral health products such as toothpaste can cause burns to the sensitive skin of your lips.
- Be mindful of the medications you take. I’m definitely not a doctor and this is purely from personal experience. I find that whenever I take antibiotics for a long period of time, my lips tend to be drier and darker.
- Take less coffee and drink more healthy options.

How to make exfoliating lip scrub at home
Lip scrubs are some of my favorite beauty products for a very irresponsible reason: sugar particles. I love when they accidentally slip into my tongue although I try to make adult decisions to rinse them out sometimes.
You may order your ingredients online. However, you may shop from local physical stores.

- Granulated sugar, specifically.
Buy Brown sugar online for $12.48
Get white sugar $8.00
Not icing sugar, or any other form of sugar. It needs to be granulated. The coarseness of the particles of granulated sugar is what does the exfoliation process.
Sugar is very soluble so it melts on your lips. You can use brown or white sugar. I prefer to use brown sugar because it feels moist on the fingers, unlike white sugar. You can use white sugar if that’s available to you.
- Cucumber juice or aloe Vera
Lily of the desert aloe vera juice $25.40
There are other forms of plant juices used to make lip scrubs that have natural brightening effects. Personally, I prefer to use cucumber Juice or aloe Vera. Simply because it’s very mild and feels most hydrating. Evidently, it’s not dry and doesn’t have any high concentration of fruit acid. However, aloe vera is extremely bitter.
- Honey for extra hydration and protection due to its antimicrobial nature. Shop for $49.35
- Coconut oil or olive oil to fight pigmentation and nourish your lips.
